The Greek name for the island is pronounced Zakinθos. Compared to the "promoted" Greek islands, such as Crete, and some others, designed mainly for fairly wealthy foreign guests, Zakynthos is more focused on middle-class tourists, mostly Greeks, who have traditionally chosen the Ionian archipelago since the middle of the 20th century. This does not mean that the service on Zakynthos does not meet international standards, on the contrary, the inhabitants of the island surround each of their guests with attention and care, which are sometimes so lacking in international hotels spoiled by an abundance of tourists.

For many centuries, Zakynthos, which, along with the other Ionian Islands, managed to escape the dark ages of Ottoman occupation, developed a rich culture under the influence of the Italian Renaissance and the European Enlightenment. But this is what makes Zakynthos interesting, because small, cozy and mostly pebble beaches lost among the rocks, most of which can only be reached by sea on a rented or sightseeing boat, attract romantics and lovers of breathing wild unbridled nature.

Crystal clear, deep turquoise, the sea here is quite deep and much colder than in the southern regions, but the underwater terrain is much more interesting, which attracts many divers and snorkelers.

In the south of Zakynthos, sandy beaches with warm and shallow water prevail. It is in this part of the island that the coast, where the Caretta Caretta turtles come to lay eggs in summer, is carefully protected by the National Marine Park due to their great ecological importance.

In order to protect this rare species, there are certain restrictions that have made it possible to preserve the pristine beauty of the southern coast of Zakynthos, such as not being on the beaches after sunset or using your own umbrellas.

Kalamaki

Covered with fine golden sand, stretching in both directions as far as the eye can see, this vast beach is one of the most popular in Zakynthos due to its proximity to the city and crystal clear calm waters.

Churches and temples. Which are worth a visit

Despite the centuries-old domination of the Venetian Catholics over the island, the inhabitants of Zakynthos did not betray Byzantine Orthodoxy, faithfully remaining faithful to its traditions, and carefully observing all the rites and rituals.

Churches, temples and monasteries, repeatedly destroyed either by the elements or by conquerors, were meticulously restored to the smallest detail in order to again bring the light of Christianity to the inhabitants of the island.

Church of St. Dionysius

Built shortly before the 1953 earthquake, this largest cathedral on Zakynthos became one of the three buildings on the island that not only survived that terrible disaster, but received absolutely no damage.

Today it is the main cathedral of Zakynthos, thanks to the high 40-meter bell tower on the embankment, which has become a kind of landmark and hallmark of the main city of the island.

Nothing less appearance the interior of the temple is impressive: marble columns, numerous lives on frescoes and icons, colored stained-glass windows, a carved wooden altar with a gilded iconostasis, magnificent chandeliers, seats trimmed with red velvet and a silver shrine with the relics of a saint. Monastery of the Holy Anafonitria

This monastery is of exceptional importance for Zakynthos, because the patron saint of the island, Dionysius, spent the last years of his life here.

Built in the XV century. the monastery has a shady courtyard with a garden full of flowers, conducive to tranquility and solitude. Inside the monastery church there is an ancient icon of the Mother of God, taken out of Constantinople captured by the Turks.

Monastery of St. George "Gremnonsky"

In the region of Gremnon, famous for its wild natural beauty, the monastery of St. George, which was founded in 1535 as a refuge for Orthodox hermits.

A little later, in order to protect the monastery from pirate raids, an impressive tower was erected, which has now become a favorite object for photographing visitors.

Moving from the monastery in the direction of Ano Volimes and turning sharply to the left at the sign, you can find a viewing platform to admire from above a magnificent view of the sea and the bay of Navagio.

This is a building built during the Venetian times, which is part of the ensemble of Solomu Square in the center of Zakynthos, which not only survived the earthquake of 1953, but also the fire that followed it.

The significance of this temple for the island, in addition to miraculous salvation from the elements, also lies in the fact that the patron saint of Zakynthos Dionysius served as a parish priest here.

The island of Zakynthos has a rich centuries-old history, reflected in its museums, some of which I will describe below.

Museum of Byzantine Art

Upon entering the Byzantine Museum, the layout of the city of Zakynthos before the terrible earthquake of 1953, made on the basis of old photographs, immediately catches your eye, which makes it possible to imagine what the capital of the island once was.

Among the exhibits of the museum there are also many photographs showing the view of historical buildings before and after the earthquake.

The main exposition presents Byzantine icons, magnificent wooden sculptures, marble decorations of temples, church utensils for liturgies, candlesticks, shrines, frescoes and iconostases of the 15th-17th centuries.

Among the most significant exhibits are also paintings by artists who created the local school of painting, covering the time frame from the post-Byzantine period to the present day.

Also here you can see real Orthodox shrines, secretly taken out during the Turkish rule from the occupied territories to the local temples of free Zakynthos, and when they were destroyed by an earthquake, they found their place in the museum's exposition.

Maritime Museum "Milanio"

A visit to the museum, founded by the famous Greek marine painter, a native of Zakynthos, Adonis Milanos, can impress anyone even slightly familiar with the history of Hellas, because its collection consists of genuine historical relics, kindly offered by the descendants of such legendary figures as Laskarina Bouboulina, Miltiadis Yatridis and others.

The museum exposition is divided into five thematic sections according to historical eras: antiquity, the Byzantine Empire, the Revolution of 1821, the ΧΙΧ and ΧΧ centuries: many unique photographs, ship models, naval uniforms, daggers, medals, compasses and much more. For example, here are objects from the Greek destroyer "Leon", the former American "Eldridge", which allegedly took part in the Philadelphia experiment, which is widely discussed to this day.

In addition, the exposition features more than 140 amazingly detailed and detailed paintings that depict ships from different eras. Another similar exhibition of marine paintings by Adonis Milanos is located in the Museum of the Merchant and Navy in the city of Piraeus.

Grigorios Xenopoulos Museum

The museum, located on Gaita Street, is dedicated to the famous Greek prose writer and playwright, one of the creators of the urban novel genre in European bourgeois literature, G. Xenopoulos.

Here you can see the personal belongings of the writer, manuscripts and editions of his works, photographs, as well as furniture and other household items in the interior of the house that belonged to his family.

Helmi Museum of Natural History

Founded by Panagiotis Helmi in the village of Agia Marina and bearing his name, the museum is designed primarily for children.

More than 3,000 exhibits are presented here, telling about the flora and fauna of both Zakynthos itself and the whole world.

The purpose of the museum is to acquaint visitors with the unique ecosystem of Zakynthos, inherited from nature, which we are obliged to preserve for posterity.

The Helmi Museum is recognized as one of the most complete and best such collections both in Greece and in the Balkans as a whole.

Ethnographic Museum of Vertzio

At the entrance to this museum, located in the village of Pigadakya, there is a feeling of time stopped, because its exposition, lovingly collected by local residents, represents more than 200 years of history and way of life of the villages lost in the mountainous regions of Zakynthos.

The bedroom, living room, kitchen, dining room of a traditional village dwelling are shown with all the utilitarian items and tools for housekeeping, cooking and other daily tasks both inside and outside the house. Old newspapers, geographical maps, coins represent the smallest trifles of everyday life, and the flour-grinding equipment, grape or olive oil presses on display show the traditional occupations of the islanders.

Located in the southern part of Zakynthos, the largest sea bay, Laganas, due to its unique ecological significance, qualifies as a specially protected area. In order to better protect the flora and fauna and their habitat, in 1999 the National Marine Park of Zakynthos was established here. Its foundation was caused by an urgent need, since rare species of wild animals in this part of the Ionian Sea were under the threat of extinction.

Today, the southern coast of Zakynthos, which is a favorite breeding ground for the rare Caretta-Caretta or Loggerhead loggerhead turtles, and the western coast, where the endangered Mediterranean white-bellied Monachus-Monachus seals find refuge, are the object of special care.

The marine park includes the coast, water area and islands of the Gulf of Laganas, as well as the Strofades archipelago located 20 miles south of Zakynthos. These areas are characterized by different types of ecosystems, both of national and European importance, including, among others, dune and coastal zones, as well as grassy meadows on the marshy shores of Lake Keri, where hundreds of species of flora and fauna occur.

The entire water area of ​​Laganas Bay is divided into zones indicated by buoys:

Askos Rock Park

Here you can see in a natural habitat, complemented by artificial decorations of stone buildings that could have existed here in the Neolithic era, hundreds of animals living freely in natural conditions: mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, as well as many species of native plants, shrubs and trees.

The park is open all year round except on very rainy or cold winter days. There is no time limit for visiting during park opening hours. Photographing and video filming is allowed. Tours are conducted by qualified guides, or you can take a printed booklet and explore the area on your own.

Guests of the park can also follow and even, under the guidance of a mentor, take part in any activities on its territory, such as picking olives, milking goats, etc.

The Askos Stone Park is located one kilometer from the port of Agios Nikolaos, located on the northern coast of Zakynthos, and five from the traditional settlement of Volimes. The Blue Caves are 3 km from here, and Navajo Bay is 8 km away. The capital of the island is 30 km from the park.

The closest island from the Ionian archipelago to Zakynthos is the cosmopolitan and magnificent Kefalonia, which certainly deserves a separate big story. Here I will talk about two miniature islands in Laganas Bay, which are extremely popular with tourists.

Marathonisi

A small island in Laganas Bay near the Keri Peninsula, which looks like a turtle, which is why it has the second name Turtle. You can get here by boat from the villages of Laganas, Keri and Agios Sostis.

As one of the nesting sites for turtles, Caretta Caretta is protected by the National Marine Park, so staying on the island is limited only to daytime hours.

There are two beaches - pebbly and sandy, as well as several sea grottoes that are worth exploring. There are no shops here, but a boat approaches the beaches with a small canteen serving snacks and drinks.

Peluso

Located on the other side of Laganas Bay, about 2 miles from Daphne Beach. Except for one ruined building on the very shore, there are no other traces of human presence here.

The island is a specially protected area where it is forbidden to stay after sunset, as well as swimming with a motor - only on oars. Having rented a boat, I advise you to load a supply of drinking water and food into it.

There is a beach with fine white sand, and on the opposite side of the island there is a rather large cave.

Zakynthos is one of the most fertile places in Greece and produces the widest range of local products. The local food is based on extremely healthy, satisfying and, most importantly, unusually tasty Mediterranean cuisine.

In most cities and villages of Hellas, you can see establishments called “psitopolio”, where meat is spun on a spit for the Greek analogue of shawarma, the so-called “Gyro”. Transportation of olive oil in luggage is associated with certain difficulties both in its packaging and during customs clearance, so I rarely advise you to carry it to Russia from Greece.

The most grateful guests of Zakynthos are usually children, for whom this is a truly heavenly place: the gentle sea, the hot sun, dense vegetation, amazing excursions to Navagio Bay and the Blue Caves, visiting interesting museums such as Milanio or Helmi, acquaintance with rare species of marine animals in Marine national park and land - in the Park of Stones. And, most importantly, a real abundance of the freshest fruits, vegetables and simply delicious food.

From the experience of raising my children, I can confirm: such trips remain in the memory of the baby for life, bringing him closer to his parents and making him feel like a truly full-fledged member of the family.

Every traveler who has ever visited Zakynthos has his own idea of ​​which part of the island to prefer for living. Those who want to spend time on the beach, fully surrendering to the sun and the sea, will most likely choose the southern part of the island - the areas of Laganas and Kalamaki. Adherents of an active lifestyle and mountain and sea sports will probably choose to live in the central or northern part of Zakynthos: the villages of Mikro-Nisi, Alykes, etc.

Personally, I don’t really like to live in the Greek islands near the port and city center, preferring quiet villages on the coast, where there are not many tourists, affordable prices and a patriarchal way of life.

Argassi

A five-minute drive from the capital of the island towards the beautiful peninsula of Vasilikos is the tourist resort of Argasi, where you can spend the whole day on an amazing sandy beach with crystal clear waters, ideal for families with children.

In the southern part of the beach, the remains of the old Venetian bridge attract everyone's attention, who knows how to get here.

Also in the vicinity of Argasi there is an amazing church of Panagia Skopiotissa, built in 1624, standing in the ruins of an old ruined monastery. And in antiquity, this place was the temple of Artemis.

On the central road of the village there are many shops, supermarkets, clubs, bars, restaurants, taverns and cafes, and in general everything that you may need on vacation, as well as taste Greek, Italian and international cuisines of the world.

Despite the outward patriarchy and calmness, in the Argasi area there are some of the best nightly youth bars of Zakynthos and popular clubs with Greek music.

Thanks to its favorable location near the main town of Zakynthos, proximity to the sea and beaches of the Vasilikos peninsula, peace and quiet, but at the same time, establishments with a stormy nightlife make this resort an ideal place to stay and explore the island.

This, in fact, consisting of two parts: Upper and Lower, the picturesque settlement can, without exaggeration, be called the capital of the mountain villages of Zakynthos. It is located in a natural environment of stunning landscape beauty and rich vegetation. The road here lies between pine forests, olive groves, vineyards and fields of cereals and vegetable crops, and from above, the eye continually snatches a lacy rocky coast, indented with many crevices, where tiny beaches and endless turquoise sea are hidden to the horizon.

In the Upper Village - Ano Volimes you can admire the traditional architecture of the mountain villages of Greece with invariably narrow streets and an old stone church with a bell tower.

From the Lower - Kato Volimes village you can easily go down to the coast with the beaches of Xigio, Makris Gialos, and Agios Nikolaos.

There is also the amazing Askos Rock Park, which is described in more detail in the corresponding section, the church of Agia Paraskevi with stunning frescoes, and boats depart from the beaches of Makris Gialos and Agios Nikolaos to Navajo Bay and the Blue Caves.

And the best way to end your trip to Volimes, I think, would be a good dinner in one of the small and cozy local taverns. The food and wine here is exclusively from the freshest, locally produced organic products and, trust me, it will be another pleasant memory of this trip.

The village of Keri on the peninsula of the same name, located 19 km from the capital of Zakynthos, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, has rich history and carefully preserved traditions. As they say, at one time the ancient Greek historian Herodotus lived here.

The clean sandy beach, which overlooks the island of Marathonisi, is the best suited for an unforgettable family holiday with children and romantic couples in love.

There are many taverns in the waterfront area, where there is always the opportunity to get to know traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine.

Here, in a small port on the coast, you can rent a boat to move to the island of Marathonisi or go on an excursion to the nearby caves at Cape Keri.

Also, vacationers offer their services in organized and safe diving at the nearest points of the coast diving club.

For millennia, Zakynthos has been at the historical crossroads of all parts of the world, the endless movement of peoples and the interpenetration of cultures. Here, for example, in 1628, one of the first revolutionary uprisings in Europe broke out, sunk by the Venetians in blood, but remaining forever in the memory of the people.

Freedom, patriotism, respect folk traditions, devotion to Orthodox Christianity - these features, characteristic of any Greek, are expressed in the inhabitants of Zakynthos no less. And some ostentatious cosmopolitanism, Italian words in the local dialect, a little more openness and bravado, sharpness and irony make up the colorful shades of the local folk character, which can be anything, but never boring.

I am sure that everyone who is planning a trip to Zakynthos included in her program a trip to Navagio Bay, a boat trip to the Blue Caves, an ascent to the Venetian fortress on the hill of Bokhali, and an acquaintance with the famous sea turtles Caretta-Caretta on Geraka beach. To select other points of your trip, I think the recommendations in this article of mine are enough. But even its decent volumes were not enough to describe everything more or less worthy of acquaintance on this wonderful island.

In Greece, a single tariff for taxi services is established by law. But the island taxi drivers, spoiled by an abundance of tourists, pretend that they do not know him. And arguing with them is usually useless, even a statement to the tourist police of the island most often does not help: many islanders are related to each other.

Therefore, before getting into a taxi at the parking lot near the port or somewhere in the city, you should ask the driver for the approximate price of the future trip, and, after getting into the car, make sure that he turns on the meter. And you should not walk around the parking lot in search of a cheaper option. You probably won't find it! Trade union solidarity is more important than personal gain. Conclusion - it is best to come to terms with the proposed circumstances! Sometimes it is cheaper to rent a car from the nearest Rent-a-Car office.

The car ordered by phone comes with the counter already turned on, on which there may be a considerable amount - this should also be foreseen. And do not be surprised when, having taken a car at the port, you will wait a long time for the start of the trip, watching how the driver picks up a full cabin of passengers - these are the local rules and traditions. At the same time, the cost of the trip is not divided between clients - each new arrival will pay the full amount according to the counter. But, taking a car as a couple, family or company, pay only one tariff.

And if you already got into the car, talk to the driver, admire the beauties of Greece and Zakynthos, take a business card from him with a phone - you see, next time he will reduce the price of the “old friend” a little.

Public transport

Buses of the local island network depart from the station ΚΤΕΛ of the main city of the island to its other settlements: Laganas, Kalamaki, Argasi, Vasiliko, Tsilivi, Porto Roma, Volimes, Agrilia, passing along the road past the popular beaches described above.

The ticket price for all flights is 1.80 EUR, except for the mountain route to Volimes - 3.60 EUR.

Transport rental

It is not difficult to rent a car or motorbike in Greece in the summer. The prices for these services are quite democratic, starting from 30–40 EUR for a car and from 20 for a motorcycle. For quad bike enthusiasts who have traveled only on the plains before, I advise you to be extremely careful - narrow mountain roads can be extremely treacherous!

To rent, you only need an international driver's license, and that the experience is not less than 1 year. A customer's credit card immediately makes the staff be much more polite and courteous. Be sure to take a map of the island and a business card with the phone number of the company from the office. The phone number of the insurer is usually specified in the rental agreement.

History and culture of Zakynthos

The historical name of the island is associated with the name of the son of King Dardan, the ruler of Arcadia. According to Greek myths, the royal offspring of Zakynthos landed on this land lost in the sea and founded a city here. This legendary character is deeply revered by the locals. Zakynthos, sitting thoughtfully on a stone with a snake in his hand, is depicted on the green banner of the island, which flutters on all public buildings, along with the striped blue and white national flag of Greece. These words belong to the brilliant poet and public figure, aristocrat and patriot Dionysios Solomos, one of the creators of the modern modern Greek literary language, who lived and worked on the island in the first half of the 19th century.

The beauty of the island “drown in emerald forests” was described by Homer in his epic “Iliad”, and Zakynthos can also be found there in the lists of Greek policies that sent ships with their courageous warriors to the walls of Troy. Only here you can hear the Zakynthian cantades - ballads performed to the accompaniment of sweet-sounding mandolins. Until now, in Zakynthos, men in love, quite in the Venetian manner, perform serenades for their chosen ones. But, of course, in Greek, and with noticeable national differences in the melody.

The rule of the Venetians ended at the end of the 18th century, when Napoleon's troops captured the island. During the Mediterranean campaign against France, the Russian fleet under the command of Admiral Fyodor Ushakov approached the shores of Zakynthos and drove the French garrison off the island. Soon, the first Greek state formation in many centuries was proclaimed on the Ionian Islands - the Republic of the Seven Islands (1800-1815), which was under the auspices of the Russian Empire.

Aquifers are saturated with useful minerals. It is interesting that in ancient times there was a mineral lake on the island, the bottom of which was covered with natural bitumen. This substance was exported to Athens for waterproofing the hulls of warships of the ancient Greek fleet.

The ecological situation in Zakynthos is impeccable. There are no industrial enterprises here. Exceptions are an edible olive oil factory and a distillery. However, these productions do not have a harmful effect on the environment.

The island of Zakynthos has a temperate Mediterranean climate. The impartial meteorologists of the European Union recognized the local climatic conditions as the mildest in all of Greece - both among the continental regions and in various island parts of the country. In winter, it is warm on the island of Zakynthos: in January during the day it is usually around +11 ... +15 ° С, at night the thermometer is unlikely to show less than +5 ° С. This is a period of rain and thunderstorms. Frosts here are a rarity, and snow is perceived as a natural phenomenon.

Already in late April-early May, the island begins to receive guests. The air warms up during the day to +22...+25 °С, and coastal waters - up to +18...+20 °С. In summer, Zakynthos is quite comfortable: the daytime air temperature fluctuates around +30 °C. The tourist season here lasts until October inclusive.

City of Zakynthos

The capital of the island is also called Zakynthos, but the locals informally call it Hora. This is a compact city nestled on the slope of a wooded hill overlooking the sea. Start your walk with main square Solomos, from the monument to the poet.

At the first acquaintance with the miniature capital, you will notice that the streets of the city of Zakynthos are characterized by some theatrical decorativeness. So it is, almost all the old buildings after the last major earthquake in 1953 were restored from ruins using modern materials. Among them are quarters with medieval Venetian mansions lined with beige travertine and terracotta. They have irretrievably lost the true spirit of antiquity, but, nevertheless, they successfully create a cozy aura of the Mediterranean. Fortunately, several old buildings survived in the city.

Be sure to visit the Byzantine Museum. Here are collected unique artifacts, archaeological finds, restored frescoes taken from the walls of monasteries and churches destroyed by earthquakes. There are about a thousand icons on display (the oldest of them was painted in the 12th century). The museum is open from 09:00 to 15:00 and is closed on Mondays. Entrance ticket - 8 €.

The tallest building in Zakynthos is the bell tower of the Orthodox church of St. Dionysius. This church is located on the waterfront, a stone's throw from the port. Dionysius was a bishop on the island in the 16th century, he became famous for his good deeds and philanthropy. For several centuries, Dionysius has been considered the patron saint of Zakynthos. The cathedral houses a precious silver shrine with the relics of the saint. Near it is always a pair of light shoes. Parishioners claim that over time these shoes become worn out and have to be replaced, because Dionysius walks around the island, continuing to help righteous Christians. On August 24, the whole island celebrates the day of remembrance of its patron. An interesting museum of church utensils, priests' vestments, old church books, icons and paintings is open at the cathedral. Entrance to the museum is paid - 2 €.

Once upon a time, a powerful Venetian stronghold towered over the city. It was erected in the 15th century, on the site of the destroyed ancient temples. Only some of its buildings, the arch of the gate and part of the walls survived. The fortress is located at the very top of the hill. If you find the ascent tedious, a taxi will take you to the top for 3 €.

Those wishing to learn more about the culture of the island should look into the Museum of the poet Solomos and the Museum visual arts artists of the Ionian school of painting. Both of them are located near the seaport of the city.

Resorts and beaches

The resort life of Zakynthos is concentrated on its eastern coast. The rating is headed by the most popular and expensive resort - Laganas. It is here that the most luxurious hotels, spa centers, the best restaurants and the largest nightclubs are located. No less noisy and fun in the democratic resort of Argassi. Couples with children and lovers of a relaxing holiday are better off heading to Alykes, Tsilivi or Kalamaki, while fans of water sports are waiting for the resort centers of Alykanas and Agios Nikolaos.

There are many beaches on the coast of the island of Zakynthos, often they smoothly merge into one another and stretch for kilometers. Entrance to most of them is free, you only need to pay for renting beach equipment. Many beaches are covered with pebbles; walking barefoot on such a surface is not very convenient, especially when the pebbles are hot. It is better to buy rubber slippers immediately upon arrival, they are sold for 6-7 € in all shops with beach accessories.

A cult place on the island - a charming beach in the azure bay of Navagio, strewn with sand and small marble pebbles, it is known as Shipwreck Beach. It has been called that since 1980, when the Panayiotis ship, loaded with contraband tobacco from Turkey, ran aground and was then washed ashore by the waves. The rusty wreck of a ship of unfortunate smugglers lies in the middle of the beach to this day, attracting the attention of tourists, who often leave commemorative inscriptions on its corroded side.

In calm waters, the water in the waters of Navagio becomes an unreal sapphire color, and when the waves of the sea raise sand from the bottom, it acquires a milky blue hue. The beach is accessible only from the sea, although you can also admire it from above, walking along the edge of the steep cliffs surrounding it. There are two viewing platforms at the top, but there are a lot of people who want to get here, often you have to stand in line. Tourists from all over the island are brought to the beach by boats, boats and even large vessels for 200-300 passengers. Only from the pier of the Skinari resort, boats leave for Navagio Bay every quarter of an hour. From the capital, you can sail here on a "pirate" sailboat.

By the middle of the day, the beach is crowded, so it’s better to go to the bay early in the morning, and then, after enjoying a swim and taking great photos, have lunch at a local tavern with Greek cuisine and a panoramic view of the bay.

Here you can sometimes see a stunning sight - wingsuit fans jump onto the beach from a cliff in wing suits. After half a minute of desperate flight, the base jumpers land to thunderous applause from the astonished audience. For lovers of extreme sports, there is another entertainment here: strong ropes hang between the rocks, you can swing on them and get a decent dose of adrenaline.

The two-kilometer sandy spit of Laganas beach is a typical holiday destination in Zakynthos. It is crowded here, but there is enough space under the sun for everyone. Excursion boats depart from the pier, boats with a motor are offered for hourly rent. In taverns and beach bars you can rent sun loungers (7 €), there are sports equipment rentals. Music is heard from everywhere, there are hotels and restaurants in the neighborhood.

If you are looking for solitude, pass through the eucalyptus grove, and a kilometer from the bustling Laganas, relax on Kalamaki Beach, which is part of the national reserve. The dense sandy bottom is gently sloping here, and sea turtles have chosen the shallow coastal waters. They are often seen underwater.

When the sun rises to its zenith, take a walk to Crystal Beach along the coastal cliffs. Quartz crystals flare in the crevices, shining like a scattering of diamonds. There is only one tavern on the deserted shore where you can have an inexpensive and tasty meal. At the tavern there is a shower room and a toilet, a rental point for beach equipment (two sunbeds and an umbrella - 8 €). Canoe rentals are also available here. Planes fly low over the coastline heading for an airport a few kilometers to the north. They are so close that you can read the names of airlines and study world geography from them. By the way, night flights to the island have long been banned - the noise of aircraft engines frightens turtles crawling out at night to lay their eggs in the warm sand.

Dafni beach

Another secluded beach can be found on the coast of the marine reserve south of the city of Zakynthos. It's called Daphne. Go there by car, scooter or bicycle, admiring the stunning beauty of the scenery. True, the path along the winding serpentine mountain road is not easy and even extreme. The reward for you will be an incredibly picturesque coastal strip, where olive trees grow right in the sand. The bottom of the beach is flat, the sea is usually calm. There are places where turtles lay their eggs, such areas are fenced with huts, and volunteer keepers are on duty near them. There is a playground on the beach, and a bar serving drinks and inexpensive fast food in the olive garden. Order any drink (a cup of coffee, lemonade) and take a sunbed for free. There are also taverns where you can have a delicious lunch. Specialties are prepared with freshly caught fish and octopus.

Gerakos beach is located next door, it is more spacious and accessible, but there are more vacationers here.

Entertainment

Each resort town of Zakynthos offers tourists its own entertainment program. For example, in Argasi (1 km from Zakynthos) one of the most popular nightclubs "Barrage" is located. The building with a dance stage and three bars is surrounded by a fragrant garden where olive trees grow interspersed with orange and tangerine trees. There is an open music bar in the garden, tables are placed under the trees on stone terraces. The moderators of fun here are often world-famous DJs.

The resort town of Laganas is known for its karting center "Laganas Go-Karts". There are kart racing tracks of varying difficulty here. There are tracks for children and beginners who are driving for the first time. And if you want to ride a horse and master the basics of equestrian sports, go to Lucky Luke Horse Riding. Nearby is the golf club "Fantasy Mini Golf". Here your children can learn how to play this aristocratic game. For kids, there are specially made small clubs and other mini-equipment. It's fun to watch them play. There is probably no quieter and more picturesque place for a relaxing family holiday on the island of Zakynthos. Six kilometers west of the city of Tsilivi, in the depths of the island, one of the largest water attractions in Greece, Water Village, has been built, its area exceeds 40,000 m². There are many water rides, extreme giant slides, slides for adults and children, relaxing pools and overflow channels. The park is immersed in the greenery of trees and lianas, flowering shrubs.

Splash Fun Tsilivi Waterpark is an excellent water park located in the resort town of Planos. There are many extreme pipelines and slides. After visiting such an attraction, it will be pleasant to relax on a soft inflatable circle in the calm course of the annular canal lined with juniper and roses. Pleasure boats are often accompanied by dolphins, every now and then jumping out of the waves and invariably delighting passengers. Blue Grottoes is one of the most wonderful places in the northern part of the island, they are created by the surf at the very tip of Cape Skinari, built of white limestone. Like the buttresses of a stone cathedral, the arches of the grottoes support a sheer cliff.

The locals will tell you that in the days when the Olympian gods ruled the world, beautiful Nereids lived in the Blue Caves. A little imagination - and you will imagine how they dance against the backdrop of magical stone arches. During the day, the Blue Caves are grandiose, and at sunset and early dawn they look absolutely fantastic. The water is indeed turquoise. An unusual color is created by the sun's rays, refracted in microscopic particles of minerals that mix with sea water from near-bottom sources. After swimming in the grottoes, you will feel how the healing water has refreshed your skin.

If the sea is not stormy, tourists are given the opportunity to swim and inspect the grottoes from the inside. In turbulent weather, the ship does not approach the shore. But you will see a miracle that "does not work" in calm. Among the arches there is a narrow imperceptible gap. When the breaking wave hits the rock with force, a high fountain beats out of the crack.

It is also interesting to go on a trip to Navagio Bay with several stops on the most beautiful beaches of the island. The cost is from 35 €. At your choice - and other routes, including the neighboring island of Kafalonia.

Fans of individual water travel can be advised to rent a boat in the village of Limni Keri. Unlike many other rental places, boats here are not rented by the hour, but for the whole day. It is not difficult to navigate the sea, GPS systems are installed on the boats. At the beginning and at the end of the season, a four-seater motorboat will cost 60 €, in the peak season (July-August) the cost of renting a motorboat increases to 80-90 €. It offers boats and more, designed for 6 passengers. The cost of their rent is 120-150 €. Please note that fuel is not included in the rental price. So filling the tank with gasoline is up to you.

When traveling around the island, be sure to visit the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. It is located on the coast of Laganas Bay, south of the island's capital. The protected park occupies almost the entire water area of ​​the bay, it includes the islands of Peluso and Marathonisi. Monachus seals and many rare representatives of the Mediterranean ichthyofauna live in the warm waters of the bay. But the main wards of the park staff are the Mediterranean turtles Caretta-caretta. The park was established in 1999, since then environmentalists have managed to significantly increase the population of these ancient animals, which were on the verge of extinction. From May to August, sea turtles lay leathery eggs on the beaches. Volunteer patrols operate in the park, they enclose the clutches and guard them until the hatched turtles go to sea. Such places are also found in other parts of the island. On the beaches chosen by the turtles to prolong the family, virgin nature reigns. It is forbidden to fish there, often there are no motorboats with water skis and "bananas", scooters and other water activities, noisy sports games are not welcome. However, other beach infrastructure is available - parking lots, sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets, taverns.

Nature lovers should also visit the Museum of Natural History of Zakynthos, where all the island's flora and fauna are presented. The Askos Stone park is also interesting, where plants and animals from all over the world are collected. Guides say that in Greece it has no analogues.

Historical landmarks

In the small mountain village of Echo Chora, located 25 km west of the capital of the island, one of the oldest trees in the world grows - a giant olive, whose age exceeds 2000 years. When Jesus Christ preached in Jerusalem, this olive tree was already two hundred years old. Amazingly, the tree, as if nothing had happened, bears fruit every year. This is a mandatory stop for tourist buses. Near the ancient olive tree, dine in a family tavern, try the signature rabbit roast, taste stifado and wash down a delicious meal with homemade wine. Portions are huge, prices are low. Souvenirs are also sold here.

Away from the bustle of the resort, on the top of Mount Skopos (492 m above the sea), there is an abandoned medieval monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa. You can get to this attraction by rented car or taxi, as well as as part of an excursion by bus. Prepared tourists come here on mountain bikes. You need to go from the town of Argassi to the south, towards Vasilikos. After 2 km, behind the old stone bridge, turn right at the sign, then you will have a three-kilometer ascent along a steep mountain road. Public transport does not go to the monastery. If you arrive on your own, ask the friendly caretaker (she is also the hostess of the bar at the entrance) to open the temple to view the medieval frescoes of Byzantine writing. One of them - the image of the Mother of God - is considered miraculous. Nearby are the ruins of a ruined church and a standing bell tower. The mountain offers wonderful views of the city of Zakynthos and the expanses of the Ionian Sea. In the west, you can see the island of Kefalonia, and in the east, the Peloponnese. The caretaker does not charge entry fees, but she will be grateful for a small donation, and also for purchasing a glass of orange juice with ice or a cup of frappe (1.5 €) in her cafe, which she cooks excellently.

On the way back to the coast, inspect the dilapidated Byzantine church of St. Nicholas (there is a sign). Restoration work is underway here.

A special tranquility reigns in the quiet monastery of Anafonitria, built in the 15th century. This is the oldest of the active monasteries in Zakynthos. Surprisingly, the earthquake almost did not touch the stone buildings of the monastery - probably because St. Dionysius once lived here. When visiting the monastery, pay attention to the icons of the XIII-XVI centuries, hanging on the walls in the twilight of a small church. Photographing them is not allowed. In the courtyard, several nuns sell candles, crosses, home-made rosaries made of multi-colored pebbles, consecrated icons. Goats graze serenely nearby, and plump cats bask on the stones. At 13:30, the access of tourists to the monastery is terminated. Nearby there is a tavern where excellent monastic veal with red sauce and excellent wine are served quite inexpensively.

Purchases

Throughout the summer season, the markets of Zakynthos are overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables, delicious cheeses, olives, and seafood. Do not miss the opportunity to taste healthy and tasty local dishes, some of which you can bring home as souvenirs.

For tourists, there are specialized souvenir and delicatessen shops on the island. Here your purchases will be packed in colorful and easy-to-carry tin boxes. A couple of bottles filled with Zakynthos olive oil or local wine, and a circle of sheep's cheese will fit here quite well.

Here you can also buy the works of local craftsmen: decorative masks, painted ceramic dishes, clay crafts, original jewelry with semi-precious stones, paintings, embroidered tablecloths.

Handmade products are also sold in shops at art studios, which are found in every resort village on the island.

There are many clothing stores on Zankif where you can buy light, beautiful summer outfits made from natural fabrics and shoes. Locally produced perfumes, created on the basis of exclusively natural ingredients, are also popular.

Kitchen

The gastronomic world of Zakynthos is incredibly diverse and offers guests of the island both simple, hearty food and the most exquisite delicacies of Mediterranean cuisine. The giants of the local cuisine are olive oil, tomatoes, lemons, garlic and Ladotiri sheep cheese. Another popular local cheese is mizithra. It is brackish and bland, and is usually served with honey or sugar. On Zakynthos, homemade bread and sweets are very tasty, which invariably contain honey and almonds.

Crown island dishes are “sartsa” and “skordostubi”. The first is based on beef, tomatoes and cheese, and the second is a delicious mix of eggplant, tomatoes and garlic, generously seasoned with olive oil.

The traditional restaurants of the island are family taverns. The best of them are in the mountains. You can spend more than one hour here, first watching how local cooks gather vegetables and fruits from which your dish will be created, and then slowly enjoy the taste of the freshest fragrant food. A hearty lunch or dinner (meat or fish dish, salad, cheese, freshly squeezed juice or beer) will cost from 20 € per person.

Fish restaurants are no less popular in Zakynthos, where they perfectly prepare dishes from perch, tuna, shrimp, crabs and other generous seafood. A three-course meal accompanied by dry wine - from 30 € per person.

There are dozens of restaurants with international cuisine on the island. Many of them serve excellent vegetarian dishes.

Where to stay

Most of the Zakynthos hotels are located on its eastern coast, where there are lively resort villages. The most popular categories among tourists are 3-4 "stars". In such hotels located on the first coastline, the cost of a double room is from 110 to 340 € per day. Accommodation in apartments or in one of two or three-star hotels located on the second and third lines will cost from 30 to 100 €.

You can also stay at Zankif in a five-star hotel. There are relatively few such hotels on the island, but each has health complexes and spas. The rooms themselves are often equipped with private hot tubs, which, of course, increases the price of accommodation. For family holidays, luxury hotels provide separate villa-cottages. Depending on the location, the number of services provided and the comfort of the room, the cost of living in such hotels starts from 150 € per day and can reach exorbitant rates.

On the quieter southwest coast of the island, accommodation prices are much lower. For example, renting an apartment (a modest but cozy 2-bed studio room) may well cost 20 € per day.

All inclusive in Zankif is not yet very common, but interesting and inexpensive options can be found.

Transport

If you are not met by the hotel transport, then from the airport "Dionysios Solomos", located 4 km from the capital of Zakynthos, you can only get to your destination by taxi. Taxis on the island are painted in a single color - metallic silver. Prices for trips are posted at the car park. For four passengers with luggage, a trip from the airport to the city of Zakynthos will cost 13 €, to Agios Nikolaos - 42 €. Taxi ranks are available in all tourist centers. You can also call a taxi by mobile phone.

Public transport in Zakynthos is well developed, and the roads meet European safety standards. The capital is connected by bus with all the cities of the island and sights scattered throughout its territory. The fare is from 1.6 to 3.1 €. However, it is not easy to understand the bus timetables out of habit. There are several flights a day to some villages, two or three a week to others. Mark on the map the places that you want to visit on your own and consult with the guides of the host travel agency. They will tell you the bus route numbers, departure and arrival stations. It is also possible to purchase sightseeing trips on comfortable buses.

If you have a spirit of freedom, rent a car. You can rent a car directly at Zakynthos airport or in the city. Here are the international car rental companies Hertz, Avis, Europcar and others. In large hotels, you can apply for a car rental at the reception. A European driver's license is officially required. But you will not be refused if the driver's license is national. You will also need a passport and a credit card. Please note that there is an age limit for driving in Greece. If you are under 21, you will not be given a car. The same applies to travelers over 70 years of age. Another nuance that complicates the movement around the island is that road signs are written in Greek, very rarely they are accompanied by duplicating English text. So choose a car with GPS.

Rental price - 28-40 € / day, depending on the class of car. An all-wheel drive SUV will be ideal for the mountain roads of the island. Be careful while driving: on the streets of cities and on highways there are a lot of careless tourists on bicycles, enthusiastically looking around the surroundings, and young people on nimble scooters.

Renting a scooter will cost 10-12 € / day, a bicycle - 3-5 € / day.

How to get there

Weekly charter flights to the island of Zakynthos are organized from May to October from Moscow (3 hours 25 minutes) and St. Petersburg (4 hours). In summer, tour operators offer flights to Zakynthos for tourists from Kazan, Rostov-on-Don, Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad and other cities.

But at any time of the year you can get to the resort island with transfers: fly a direct flight from Moscow to Athens, and then use the regular domestic flight Athens - Zakynthos (from 50 €, the flight lasts 45 minutes). There are other options. For example, you can go from Athens by bus or train to the port of Kyllini, located on the Peloponnese peninsula. From there, sea ferries run to Zakynthos.
