Koh Lipe island in Thailand: useful information and our review. Lost heaven

Ko Lipe is a remote island located in the south of Thailand, 20 km from the border with Malaysia. Washed by the waters of the Andaman Sea as part of the Adang Ravi archipelago, it is no longer a wild island, but an actively developing world resort.

Today, the island is included in the largest marine national park Tarutao in all of Southeast Asia. Distance from the mainland 70 km. Quantity local residents hardly more than 800 people, these are sea gypsies, Chao Lei (Chao Lei) or Urak Lawoi (Urak Lavoy), who came to Thailand on the island of Lipa, from Malaysia, about 100 years ago.

Ko Lipe on Thailand map

Very often the name of the island is interpreted in different ways: Koh Lipe, Koh Lipe, Koh Lipe and Koh Lipei. At the beginning of the new century, since the 2000s, with the development of low-cost air travel and sea traffic, the island of Ko Lipe has turned into a truly popular tourist center, and is also one of the protected islands where tourists who visit Thailand can freely rest.

Take care of this in advance, having previously exchanged currency, for example, in Bangkok.

The prices for food and drinks in shops, bars, restaurants are absolutely democratic. We settled in a guest house in the town and, without wasting time for a shower and changing clothes, immediately went to Ao-Nang. We walked along familiar streets, looked into the condo where we used to live, and met the readers in the evening. Closer to the night in the town we met with friends from Hua Hin. And this morning everyone started together on Koh Lipe.

How we got to Koh Lipe from Phuket

We drove along the ground. In Krabi, friends were waiting for us by car. We stopped for the night in Krabi town, and the sutra left by car in the direction of Pakbar pier. By car, drive from Krabi for about 3-4 hours. Next, I will tell you how we spent the evening in Krabi, visited the Ao Nang beach, as well as our first impressions of Ko Lipe.

Evening in Krabi

We got to Krabi by minibus in 3 hours from the central bus station, 140 baht per person. She drove, apparently, a former motorcycle biker - she was throwing herself with an energy drink all the way and drove quite aggressively. We noted for ourselves that in the future it is better to avoid trips by minibuses.

Ao Nang is not the best beach in Thailand

What's new to tell you about Krabi? We walked along Ao Nang. We felt a little nostalgic. Wanted to give the beach a second chance, but ... Ao Nang Beach is really disappointing! This is how we wrote the article 2 years ago, everything is still true! Dirty, muddy brown water, sand, which is painful to walk on, muddy bottom ... The noise from motor boats is such as if it were not a seaside, but a construction site with bulldozers ... Only the unique mountains of Krabi save the day. There would be no mountains, there would be nothing to do there at all. Who would have thought that at such an advertised resort with nice name, Krabi, one of the worst beaches in Thailand

We are in Krabi!

The guys are quite drunk, someone will think ... I don’t know, maybe it is, especially after. I hope the lovers of Ao-Nang will forgive me, but the bottom in the Moscow River looks exactly the same.

Dirty Ao Nang Beach

By the way, in the far left corner, a full-flowing stinking river flows into the sea. Very very smelly

Krabi is the most expensive mainland resort in Thailand

Prices in Krabi are another story. There is a myth among travelers that Phuket is the most expensive island ... Nonsense! Ao Nang is much more expensive than Phuket! Is there expensive transport in Phuket? The most expensive route in Phuket costs 40 baht, and the songteo from Ao Nang to town costs 50 baht.

Nepalese

Nepalese are everywhere! All the stalls in Nepalese. They are very easy to identify by their disgruntled facial expressions and Indian appearance. Katya forgot her glasses on the bus, she needed to buy new ones. In Phuket, in any tent, sunglasses for 100 baht. These impudent Nepalese muzzles tell us 350. One has only to be indignant at what such a triple cheat is, as they wave their hand at you and defiantly leave. I’m not even saying that their etiquette does not have an elementary "Hello" and a smile to the buyer. They sit with disgruntled mugs, buried in the phone.

Sunset

We met the guys living in Krabi, who, as it turned out, have been reading our blog for a long time. They are not even offended that in due time we wrote about Krabi not the most best reviews(the truth). We admired the wonderful sunset together.

Krabi town

Here in the town everything is Thai. We ate hearty soup for 80 baht and for dessert pancakes with banana. We met with friends from Hua Hin and drove to Makro. For the coming sleep they issued a beer and sleep.

The next morning we had to get up early. We had sandwiches and coffee from 7-11 and drove further by car towards Pakbar pier.

Koh Lipe island - first impressions

We will definitely describe the island of Ko Lipe in more detail. While I am sharing my first impressions. The water is clean and clear. But not turquoise, like on Similans.

View of Koh Lipe from the floating pier

Sunset Beach

First impressions of Ko Lipe

  • You have to pay for each step - for a speedboat ticket, for getting to the pier, for a boat from the speedboat to the beach, for entering the island
  • There are no "bounty" beaches here
  • The beaches are lined with boats
  • A lot of rubbish and devastation, you just have to get off the central Walking Street
  • Groceries are more expensive in stores. Prices in tourist cafes are about the same as everywhere else - dishes for 100-150 baht
  • Many Russian tourists
  • Many tourists of other nationalities
  • In the evening on the beach, music, fire shows and cozy bars, just like in Goa
  • The island is a large market with restaurants, bars and hotels among the shopping arcade.

By the way, the main beach on Ko Lipe is called Pattaya Beach.

We didn’t want to spend the night in cheap thatched bungalows, it’s romantic only for those who have never been to the tropics. We checked into a decent hotel -. Day as much as 2000 baht ($ 55). Well, this is Ko Lipe, that's ok !! Everything is great, the hotel is new, the bed is clean, but ... No hot water! Well, how can you, eh ?? Rooms are rented for 2 thousand baht per day and cannot buy at least some cheap water heaters!

Swim at Sunset Beach. Without much pleasure. It was low tide, very shallow, literally knee-deep, and there are a lot of stones at the bottom, and we did not take our swimming shoes. Tomorrow we will swim in Pattaya or go to the third beach for exploration. For a beach holiday on this island, see the new article.

  • Read:

Ko Lipe is considered a national park. We paid 200 baht ($ 6) for the entrance. And on the island itself there are a lot of such filthy places, where rubbish, building materials, something dug up and then abandoned. I understand what Thais themselves put on nature. But is it really so difficult to somehow ennoble everything, since they take money for the entrance? Thousands of tourists from all over the world come here, but they are not ashamed to breed a srach and not clean anything afterwards.

Ko-Lipe is not the same (c)

Our friends are not happy either. In the evening we ate in a cafe, took along Chang and went to the beach. The mood improved, we liked Pattaya Beach in the evening. So, while the impressions of Ko Lipe are mixed.

Have any of you been to this island? Write how he is to you? What did you like and what did not? Where to eat deliciously, what excursions did you take?

PS: I am already looking forward to the comments of the clever people, such as - "with what attitude we drove, then we got it" or "what kind of inside, you see outside" and similar philosophical nonsense. So, I answer right away, we drove with an excellent mood and expected to see the Similan level :)

Added the next day: today all morning swam in Pattaya Beach and a nearby beach. Wonderful blue water, from which you don't want to crawl out! The mood and experience of the island is improving!

Latest update: Sep 17, 2018

The Adang Archipelago, located in the southern part of the Andaman Sea, not far from the mainland of Thailand and Malaysia, is often called the "Thai Maldives", primarily for its white sand. Ko Lipe (Thailand) is the only inhabited island in this archipelago. Tourists come here to enjoy the serenity and tranquility. In addition, the island attracts divers, because many marine inhabitants live near the coast - almost a quarter of all those living in nature. The island is the southernmost point of Thailand and many tourists are frightened by the question of how to get to Ko Lipe. However, the number of travelers is increasing every year. We have prepared detailed information for those planning a trip to the island.

general information

Koh Lipe Island in Thailand is located in the southern part of the Andaman Sea and belongs to the Satun province. This is the southernmost point of the country. On a sunny, cloudless day from the island you can see the coast of Malaysia, namely the Langkawi archipelago, located at a distance of 30 km.

The distance to Phuket is 250 km, to Krabi is about 220 km, and to the mainland of Thailand is 70 km.

The length of the island is only 3 km, it is easy to get around on foot, the indigenous people on Ko Lipe are about 800 people. The main source of income is fishing and tourism.

Interesting fact! The indigenous population belongs to the sea gypsies - immigrants from Malaysia, who arrived on the island about a century ago.

On Ko Lipe, there is the Tarutao theme marine park, which was awarded the status of a national, at the end of the 20th century it was named the second largest in Thailand.

Tourist infrastructure and features of recreation

Every year, the number of tourists on the island of Ko Lipe in Thailand is increasing, despite the fact that you can only get here by water. The infrastructure is accordingly developing rapidly - the resort is flourishing and attracting more and more tourists. The first and main reason why tourists come here is the beaches, where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday or make an exciting dive, snorkeling.

Interesting fact! Not far from Ko Lipe there are several uninhabited islets, where they go on a guided tour or stay in a tent for several days.

Walking Street

The island of Ko Lipe in Thailand boasts a walking street - Walking Street, where there are souvenir shops, a pharmacy, travel agencies, cafes and an exchange office. Prices on the main street of the island are quite high, and the exchange rate is unprofitable, so it is better to stock up on everything you need on the mainland. The local attraction begins at Pattaya Beach and stretches to Sunrise Beach. The signs indicate that the street is open from 6-00 to midnight, however Walking Street does not close, many cafes, restaurants and bars open in the afternoon. Of course, most of the establishments are empty and closed by midnight, but still, you can find several bars that invite tourists.

Relatively recently, there were no bank branches and banks on the island, but today it will not be difficult to withdraw money. It should be noted that you will have to pay a commission for withdrawing money, and the rate is unprofitable. Also, in some hotels you can pay for the room and services with a plastic card, but a commission is charged for this. In exchange offices, you can exchange dollars and the currency of Malaysia - ringgitі.

There is Wi-Fi on Koh Lipe in Thailand, Internet access points are available in hotels and Internet cafes.

Most of the cafes and bars are located on the coastline, the maximum distance to the sea is 200 meters. There are no discos and other entertainment establishments, as well as attractions, on the island.

Interesting fact! The maximum distance between the beaches on the island is 1 km, so during your vacation you can easily visit all of them. The walk from one to the other will take about a quarter of an hour. If you don't like walking, rent a bike.

What is worth getting to Koh Lipe

  1. Seascapes. Already on the way to the island, by ferry, you can take beautiful photos.
  2. Vivid underwater world. There are many fish and sea inhabitants off the coast of the island; even tourists who cannot swim can take beautiful photographs. To do this, you do not need to wear special equipment, just a mask and a snorkel will be enough.
  3. Big choice sightseeing tours... Most of them are on deserted islands, it is easy to stay here for a few days. There are tours with night swimming, which shimmers with the abundance of plankton, a trip with a barbecue in the background of the sea sunset. The cost of the excursion is about $ 17-19.
  4. White beaches and clear turquoise waters. Despite the fact that getting to the island is not so easy, and there are minor flaws on Ko Lipe in Thailand, the beaches attract with their beauty and allow you to ignore minor inconveniences. Here you can see fabulous sunrises and sunsets, numerous bars offer drinks, delicious treats right on the shore.
  5. Large selection of seafood dishes. Each restaurant and bar offers delicious seafood treats you've never heard of. Some dishes are prepared right in front of tourists.

Good to know! In addition to traditional restaurants on Walking Street, there are buffets, for a certain amount you can try at least the whole range of dishes. The cost is about $ 15-17.

It would be wrong to tell only about the positive aspects of the island in Thailand. If you decide to make a trip and get to Ko Lipe, be prepared for the following unpleasant surprises:

  • garbage, the island authorities simply do not have time to take it out;
  • boats are the real scourge of the island, they are moored on all beaches;
  • cats and dogs, some of them annoying;
  • grocery prices are higher than those found in shops on mainland Thailand.

Natural disadvantage - strong ebb and flow. At high tide, the coast is under water, there is simply no place for sunbathing. At low tide, the sea is so shallow that only children can swim in the sea.

Interesting fact! The only place on the island where there is no ebb and flow is the northern edge of Sunrise Beach.

There are no large shops on the island, there are small grocery stores. Be sure to try the pancakes - they are sold in street stalls.

Transport

Getting to the island is not so easy, but on Ko Lipe we decide the issue with the movement. There are no cars, few bikes, no public transport. Travelers are offered several ways to get around the island:

  • on foot;
  • motorbike taxi;
  • bike rental;
  • boats run regularly between the beaches.

Accommodation on the island

Every year, new hotels open on Ko Lipe in Thailand, but in the high tourist season it is not so easy to find free accommodation, so it is better to book a room a few months before the trip. Most of the hotels are built right on the beach, many are bungalow-like, but you can also find a traditional hotel.

During the tourist season, three-star hotel rates are around 3,000 baht, and bungalows can be rented for 1,000 baht. In the low season, prices are halved.

Features of hotels in Ko Lipe (Thailand):

Good to know! In addition to hotels, there is also a budget accommodation option on the island - tents in campsites. Most of them are located on Sunset Beach.

Island beaches

The first and main advantage of the island of Ko Lipe is the beaches, which are considered the best in Thailand. The coastline is best only on Similan. Several decades ago, the beaches of the island were deserted, but today the situation has changed - an infrastructure has appeared, but at the same time the exotic nature has been preserved. It is for the sake of the beaches that many tourists decide to get to Ko Lipe. We have compiled for you a selection of the best places to stay on the island.

Pattaya Beach is located in the south of Ko Lipe and is a long coastline with a length of almost 1.5 km. The coast is covered with white and very fine sand. In sunny weather, the water acquires a turquoise hue, but in the low season, strong waves appear due to the wind, which bring garbage to the shore. The descent into the water is gentle and smooth. Pattaya Beach has strong ebb and flow, and given the smooth entrance to the sea, it is difficult to find a place to swim.

There is a reef near the shore, so be sure to take your mask and snorkel with you. Unfortunately, there are many boats near the coast, but they are moored in an orderly manner, leaving areas for swimming. In the evening, a fire show is held on the shore. There are many hotels, cafes and restaurants on the first line.

Good to know! Pattaya Beach has a tourist office for visitors from Malaysia and mainland Thailand. In addition, representative offices of all shipping companies operate here.

The eastern coast of the island is Sunrise Beach, there is coarse and rather loose sand, and the descent into the sea is sharp. On the right side there are corals and many different fish.

The coastline stretches for 1.5 km, and the width varies with the ebb and flow. The widest part is in the northern part, and the narrowest is in the central part.

Good to know! There are no entertainment establishments or discos here, by 22-00 the coast is empty. To get to Walking Street, you need to walk past the local slums.

There are hotels, cafes and restaurants on the shore, you can buy an excursion to the mainland of Thailand, to uninhabited islands archipelago and rent a kayak. There are also diving schools.

The only thing that darkens the rest on Sairaz Beach is the chaotically moored boats.

Interesting fact! It is believed that the beach has the most beautiful sunrises, which is why the place is named Sunrise Beach.

Western part of Koh Lipe island. This is a small, cozy beach with the most beautiful sunsets, which is why the beach was named Sunset Beach. The coast is covered with stones, in some places there are large stones in the water. The sand is coarse, non-uniform in color - white with interspersed gray and dark colors. The sea is quite shallow, there are fish in the water, but there are not so many of them. This place is calm, uncrowded, there are many boats in the central part of the beach.

Good to know! The sand is unpleasant to the touch due to shell fragments, so take your shoes with you.

There are cafes and sun loungers on the left side of the bank. There are hotels on the first line. Walking Street can be covered on foot in a quarter of an hour.

A sheltered, quiet beach, often referred to as secret. To get here, you need to go to the right along Pattaya Beach, get to the wooden bridge and cross it. Not all tourists come to this part of the island, so not everyone knows about the beach.

Good to know! The only bungalow has been built on the shore.

Cross the bridge with caution, it looks fragile, creaking boards do not give confidence. Huge boulders lie under the bridge, and turquoise water quietly splashes.

A serene, relaxing atmosphere reigns on the shore - someone is swimming in the calm sea, someone is drinking a cocktail on the coast, and someone is taking pictures of beautiful views.

The beach is perfect for swimming - the water is clean, the sea is calm, the descent is gentle. The seabed is soft, covered with sand, without stones.

Weather and climate, when is the best time to come

Ko Lipe is an island of two seasons:

  • dry - begins in late autumn and lasts until mid-spring;
  • rainy - begins in mid-spring and lasts until the second half of autumn.

Today, the island's communication with the mainland of Thailand remains open throughout the year. Earlier in the summer, during the low season, when the sea was stormy, Ko Lipe was closed, hotel staff went on vacation. In recent years, the climate on the island is so changeable that even in the low season there is good, sunny and clear weather.

As for the pricing policy in hotels, there are three seasons:

  • low - three summer months;
  • high season - two autumn months - October and November, two spring months - March and April;
  • peak - from December to February.

To get to the island, you need:

  • come to Trang or Hat Yai;
  • get to Pakbara pier;
  • purchase a ticket for the boat to Koh Lipe.

There are several ways to get to Trang or Hat Yai.

  • by plane;
  • by bus - flights depart from the southern bus station, the schedule is from 6-00 to 20-00, the journey takes 13-14 hours, the ticket price is about 1000 baht;

If you are flying from Europe, the route will be something like this: flight to Bangkok - flight to Hat Yai - bus to the pier - ferry or boat on Lipa. In fact, everything is much simpler than it seems.

The easiest option is to buy a single ticket on the website from Bangkok immediately with a transfer to Ko Lipe. Then you just get on a plane in Bangkok, and then you will be accompanied everywhere, up to the island itself.

The quietest months on the island of Lipa are October and April. During the rest of the months there are many tourists.

Koh Lipe beaches

As elsewhere in Tae, Ko Lipe does not have a single circular beach along which it would be possible to bypass the entire island. There are only three major beaches on Lipa - Sunrise, Sunset and Pattaya. And a few small ones, which can only be reached by boat. The beaches are somewhat similar - the sand is clean and white everywhere, the entrance to the water is shallow. However, there are differences, which are what experienced tourists use. So, we look at the map of Ko-Lipe.

On the map, Lipa looks like a horseshoe

Pattaya Beach is primarily a transshipment base. Brigades of tourists come here and leave from here, there is also a Thai immigration office and several large hotels. The beach is long and clean and quite suitable for swimming, however this is not a Bounty, if you know what I mean :)

Sunset is the most picturesque and “wild” beach in Ko Lipe. There are steep slopes, along the coast there are more stones and, accordingly, fewer boats.

Sunrise Beach is perhaps the most balanced. There is enough space for everyone - both beach goers and boats.

If you are looking for budget accommodation, chances are you will be staying in the center of the island, in one of the guesthouses around the local Walking Street. Hotels on the western coast of Lipa Island (especially on the hills) are quieter and with gorgeous views from the rooms, but they have their own problem - every night transport - either constantly calling the local "taxi", or walking, which is inconvenient in the dark.

If the main purpose of your holiday is diving, it is best to settle in one of the authentic resorts of Sunrise Beach, like "Adang Sea Divers & Eco Lodge"- simple, but very cheap. Here you can spend more time among fellow submariners, practice with equipment, and loading onto boats will be more optimal for you.
